Writing and editing
I'm currently available for feature and news writing and editing on a range of topics relating to men's lifestyle issues, health, fitness, fatherhood and sport.
Consultancy
Since going freelance I've used my 17 years of editorial experience to consult for a number of titles. I provide guidance on improving editorial style and content as well as inputting fresh ideas on making content more dynamic and deisgn more eye-catching and user friendly. I recently spoke at the Publishers Publicity Circle get together at Foyles Bookshop in London in September, advising around 80 book publicists on how best to approach men's magazines with a view to securing coverage of their new titles.
Curriculum Vitae
Hayter's Sports Agency; 1990-99 football match reporter at Premiership and Championship matches. After hands-on training stints at titles as varied as When Saturday Comes and Marxism Today I worked as a section editor for a number of part-work publications - the Art of Fishing, Barcelona 92 (Eaglemoss Publications) and Football Magic (Two-Can Publishing) are among those that trip off the tongue.
I was employed as a staff writer for Men's Health from 1999 to 2006, while continuing to work for Hayters and later The Sunday Times at weekends. My Men's Health assignments included a week living in an old peoples' home, a stint cooking for the Gurkhas at an army barracks in Hampshire and a training session with West Ham United prior to the 2006 FA Cup Final. Following the birth of my son I wrote a well-received monthly column on the issue of fatherhood and begain contributing features and content ideas to FQ.
I left Men's Health in January 2006 to pursue a life's ambition to flounce around as a freelance writer. I've since become a contributing editor to Men's Health and Editor-at-Large for dad's mag FQ. More recently my work has also appeared in Esquire, The Mail, T3, Zest, Company, Pregnancy Baby & You, Med Life and Altitude magazines. (Thankfully not all in the same week.)
I provide weekly news bulletins on men's health and lifestyle issues for http://www.menshealth.co.uk/ as well writing, editing and commissioning features and news stories on fatherhood issues for FQ.
Other media
I've written and edited many promotional brochures and features for clients such as Nike, Wilkinson Sword and Virgin. As a broadcaster and blower of my own trumpet I've made over 200 radio and TV appearances including interviews on Radio 5 Live, FIVE News, TalkSport, Radio London, BBC Radio Three Counties and numerous other stations catering for oil rigs in the North Sea.
